1998’s Godzilla with Matthew Broderick left a bad taste in a lot of people’s (OK, everyone) mouths. Well, here’s your first taste of next year’s Godzilla and it should absolutely wash that nastiness right out of your mouth!
It starts off with a short and not very inspirational speech by David Strathairn. I suppose it would be hard to get even elite troops ramped up about a HALO (High Altitude Low Oxygen) jump at a 200+ foot tall rampaging monster.
The visuals as they dive into a roiling storm is stunning to say the least. If the director, Gareth Edwards, put that much effort into a thirty second freefall, just imagine how gorgeous the destruction is going to be! Take note of how the barely visible Godzilla takes brief note of one of the paratroopers and then dismisses him as nothing more the gnat that he is. It’s the little touches like this that are going to make this movie a success with screaming fan boys like me.
After the jump, there are the obligatory scenes of terrified people looking up, up, UP, smashed buildings and panicked crowds. Oh yeah and Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston is the main (weak, fleshy, tiny human) character. Excited yet?
The final shot is a beautifully done pan that ends with, yeah, the bloodcurdling “SKREEEE-ONK!”
And now to reward your patience! The first teaser trailer for Godzilla:
